2005-2006 Competitions

UIL Marching Contest: The JHS Band won a "First Division" rating on Saturday, October 22 at the UIL Marching Contest held at SFA's Homer Bryce Stadium. This contest capped off two and a half months of practice and rehearsals during the hottest August, September, and October. The band also overcame a full week of school vacation the week prior to contest week. The group has now won 35 "First Division" UIL marching trophies since 1960. The three judges for the event were Richard Lovelace from New Boston, Jonathan Kelly from Cleveland, and Jerry Payne from Marshall. Drum Majors for the band are senior Lauren Abbott and junior Caitlyn Wise. A special thanks goes to all our supporters that cheered us on at contest.

UIL Twirling Contest: The JHS Twirlers once again proved they are among the best. The line attended UIL Twirling Solo and Ensemble Contest held in Lufkin on Wednesday, October 26. All seven girls that attended won first division medals and qualified for the State UIL Contest held in May at the University of Texas at Austin. Medal winners were Ashley Sides, Amber Summers, Jordan Burdine, Sherika Session, Kayla Wright, Kami Minter, and Brittany Villanueva

All-Region Competitions: Early in the fall semester, the students are given the chance to tryout for the TMEA Region 21 All-Region Band. Auditions are held at various times during the semester, with the high school tryouts being the last. The students are required to learn three etudes to play for judges and are selected according to their ability compared with other students on the same instrument.

Freshman All-Region Band: On December 9, several ninth grade students tried out for the Freshman All-Region Band. This competition gives freshmen the experience of an All-Region competition without having to compete against students of higher grade levels. Students who earned a chair in the Freshman All-Region Band were: Kevin Jones, Devron Weatherall, and Andy Melvin.

High School All-Region Band: December 10 was the tryout date for High School All-Region. Several students, including some of those who had also tried out for freshman all-region, competed for positions in the High School All-Region Bands (symphonic and concert). This is a higher level version of the freshman competition in that the students have to tryout against all grade levels and play all three etudes. Students who earned a chair in the All-Region Symphonic Band were: Niki Pierce, Ashley Wiegman, Laura Nunnally, Caitlyn Wise, and Joseph Villavisencio. Students who earned a chair in the All-Region Concert Band were: Jonathan Bullock, Chelsea Williams, Lauren Abbott, Cordero Chavira, Libby Ross, Juan Ornelas, Andy Melvin, Kaley Lybrand, Preston Parker, and Casey Toch.

All-Area: The highest chair members of the High School All-Region Symphonic Band are selected to attend all-area and compete for a chair in the prestigious All-State Band. A total of twenty-six students qualified for State Solo and Ensemble this year, which includes ensembles, twirlers, and the above mentioned soloists.

UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest: The Jacksonville High School Band had a big disappointment this year, making second division ratings in both concert and sight-reading. Although the group did not achieve their goal of sweepstakes, they are still proud of the tremendous progress made since football season ended. For the first time in about 30 years, the band remained one large group so all the members could experience challenging literature and become better players. They performed "Black Horse Troop", "Nimrod" from Enigma Variations, and "Third Suite" The band members left contest feeling they gave it their very best effort, and are already looking forward to the challenges of next year.

2004-2005 Competitions

UIL Marching Contest: On October 16, 2004 the Jacksonville High School Band left Homer Bryce Stadium at Stephen F. Austin State University victorious. National Association of Military Marching Bands (NAMMB) Marching Contest: The band's performance on November 6 at SFA was said to be the best of the season. Precise marching and playing produced the performance that was awarded a standing ovation by the entire crowd.
